JHU SAIS to Host Conference on Sustainable Development and Public Health

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), in association with Novartis Corporation, will host a daylong conference, "Sustainable Development and Public Health," on Wednesday, 11/13 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Expert panelists from academia, research organizations and government will speak throughout the day during the following sessions. The conference, hosted by the SAIS Energy, Environment, Science and Technology Program (EEST), features keynote addresses by Alfred Crosby, professor emeritus of history at the University of Texas, Austin and author of Ecological Imperialism, The Columbian Exchange, and America's Forgotten Pandemic, at 8:40 a.m. and by Jeffrey D. Sachs, professor and director of Columbia University's Earth Institute and former chairman of the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, at 9:40 a.m.

8:30 a.m. Introductory Remarks by Scott Barrett, director of the SAIS EEST Program, and Terry Barnett, chairman of Novartis, USA

8:40 a.m. Keynote addresses by Alfred Crosby and Jeffrey Sachs

11 a.m. "Drug Resistance, Globalization and Public Health"

1:45 p.m. "Innovation for Sustainable Development and Public Health"

3:35 p.m. "Policies for Sustainable Development and Public Health"

The conference, free and open to the public, will be held in the Kenney Auditorium, first floor of the SAIS Nitze Building at 1740 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. Members of the public must register to attend the conference by e-mailing eest@jhu.edu or calling 202.663.5786.
