MAIA Cooperative Degree Partners

SAIS Europe offers cooperative two-year degree programs with leading international universities. You may begin your course of study at either institution, earning a Diploma or Master’s degree from both. You must apply to, and be accepted at, both institutions.

If you are entering from a cooperative degree program, you will receive advanced standing for the relevant first year courses taken at the partner program, as indicated in the specific cooperative agreement.  Students coming from cooperative programs to SAIS Europe normally are expected to complete the requirements for the second year of the MAIA.

Certificate in Chinese and American Studies, Nanjing China

This two-year program allows students to complete a Certificate in Chinese and American Studies at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC), as well as a Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) at SAIS Europe. Students spend one year (fall/spring) at each campus, and may begin their studies at either location. Students apply through one combined application. 


Institut d’études politiques de Lille (Sciences Po Lille) France

If you are pursuing your first year of study for the Master’s cycle at Lille you can apply to SAIS Europe in Bologna for a second year of study. Upon successful completion of your second year at SAIS Europe and all of the requirements of Sciences Po, you will earn both a Master’s degree from Sciences Po and Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) from Johns Hopkins SAIS. If you begin at SAIS Europe you will earn the Diploma in International Studies and then go on to pursue a Master’s at Sciences Po Lille.

Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Austria

If you begin the program in Vienna you can apply to spend your second year of study in Bologna at SAIS Europe. Upon successful completion of all the requirements, you will earn an MAIA from Johns Hopkins SAIS. If you begin your first year of study at SAIS Europe you can spend your second year at the Diplomatic Academy. Upon successful completion of your first year at SAIS Europe you can then earn the one-year Diploma. After successful completion of the second year in Vienna, you will earn a Master of Advanced International Studies (MAIS) from the Diplomatic Academy and a Diploma.

McGill’s Max Bell School of Public Policy, Montreal, Canada

Begin your studies at either SAIS Europe or at McGill’s Max Bell School of Public Policy and after completing degree requirements you will receive both the MAIA degree from Johns Hopkins SAIS and Master of Public Policy from McGill.


SOAS University of London, UK

Begin your studies at either SAIS Europe or at SOAS University of London in one of the pre-approved master of science programs and after completing degree requirements you will receive both the MAIA degree from Johns Hopkins SAIS and a master of science from SOAS University of London.

TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY

Begin your studies at either SAIS Europe or at Tel Aviv University and after completing degree requirements you will receive both the MAIA degree from Johns Hopkins SAIS and a MA from Tel Aviv University.  The TAU programs include Conflict Resolution and Mediation, Cyber Politics and Government, Sustainable Development, and Security and Diplomacy. Students in this two-year program spend one year at each campus and apply to each campus for admission.
University of Leiden, The Netherlands
SAIS Europe Cooperative Degree Programs


MSc in Political Science

If you are completing your first year of study in the MSc in Political Science at Leiden University (in Leiden or The Hague), you may apply to SAIS Europe for your second year of study. Upon completion, you will earn both:
  • an MSc in Political Science from Leiden University, and
  • a Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) from Johns Hopkins SAIS
Alternatively, if you begin your studies with the MAIA program at SAIS Europe, you may continue at Leiden University (in Leiden or The Hague) to complete the MSc in Political Science. Upon completion of the MSc, you will also receive the MAIA degree from SAIS Europe.

MA in International Relations

If you are completing your first year of study in the MA in International Relations (Humanities) at Leiden University, you may apply to SAIS Europe for your second year of study. Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn both:
  • a Master of Arts in International Relations (Humanities) from Leiden University, and
  • a Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) from Johns Hopkins SAIS
Alternatively, if you begin your studies with the MAIA program at SAIS Europe, you may continue at Leiden University to complete the MA in International Relations (Humanities). Upon completion of the MA, you will also receive the MAIA degree from SAIS Europe.*

University of Bologna, Italy

SAIS Europe offers four, two-year cooperative degree programs with the University of Bologna at campuses in Bologna, Forlì and Rimini:
  • Department of Political and Social Sciences, Bologna and Forlì.
    If you begin the program at the University of Bologna’s International Relations (IR), Scienze Internazionali e Diplomatiche (SID), or International Politics and Economics (IPE) departments and complete your second year at SAIS Europe you will earn both a Laurea Magistrale in International Relations (IR), or in Scienze Internazionali e Diplomatiche (SID) or in International Politics and Economics (IPE) and an MAIA from Johns Hopkins SAIS. If you complete your first year of study at SAIS Europe you may earn a Diploma and then pursue either the IR, SID, or IPE Laurea Magistrale at the University of Bologna.
  • Resource Economics and Sustainable Development of the School of Economics, Management and Statistics, Rimini.
    If you begin the program at the University of Bologna’s RESD department in Rimini and complete your second year at SAIS Europe you will earn both a Laurea Magistrale in Resource Economics and Sustainable Development and an MAIA from Johns Hopkins SAIS. If you complete your first year of study at SAIS Europe you can earn the Diploma and then pursue the Laurea Magistrale in Resource Economics and Sustainable Development at the University of Bologna.
  • School of Economics, Management and Statistics, Bologna.
    Begin your studies at either SAIS Europe or the UNIBO Department of Economics. Upon successful completion of a year on each campus you earn both an MAIA from Johns Hopkins SAIS and a Laurea Magistrale in Economics from the University of Bologna.
